Acts 23:1-11 CSB
Paul looked straight at the Sanhedrin and said, "Brothers, I have lived my life before God in all good conscience to this day." [2] The high priest Ananias ordered those who were standing next to him to strike him on the mouth. [3] Then Paul said to him, "God is going to strike you, you whitewashed wall! You are sitting there judging me according to the law, and yet in violation of the law are you ordering me to be struck?" [4] Those standing nearby said, "Do you dare revile God's high priest?" [5] "I did not know, brothers, that he was the high priest," replied Paul. "For it is written, You must not speak evil of a ruler of your people." [6] When Paul realized that one part of them were Sadducees and the other part were Pharisees, he cried out in the Sanhedrin, "Brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees. I am being judged because of the hope of the resurrection of the dead!" [7] When he said this, a dispute broke out between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, and the assembly was divided. [8] For the Sadducees say there is no resurrection, and neither angel nor spirit, but the Pharisees affirm them all. [9] The shouting grew loud, and some of the scribes of the Pharisees' party got up and argued vehemently, "We find nothing evil in this man. What if a spirit or an angel has spoken to him?" [10] When the dispute became violent, the commander feared that Paul might be torn apart by them and ordered the troops to go down, take him away from them, and bring him into the barracks. [11] The following night, the Lord stood by him and said, "Have courage! For as you have testified about me in Jerusalem, so it is necessary for you to testify in Rome."
1 Peter 1:5-7 CSB
You are being guarded by God's power through faith for a salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. [6] You rejoice in this, even though now for a short time, if necessary, you suffer grief in various trials [7] so that the proven character of your faith-more valuable than gold which, though perishable, is refined by fire-may result in praise, glory, and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
Standing for Truth
Paul suffered immensely for the Gospel of Jesus, but Jesus was always right there. He was never hidden away, and He was never too busy dealing with other “important matters” the way leaders on this earth often are. Instead, in the quiet depth of the night, Jesus spoke directly to Paul: “Have courage! For as you have testified about me in Jerusalem, so it is necessary for you to testify in Rome.” In this raw moment, we see the real, comforting presence of the Lord standing right beside Paul to lift his spirits.
Far too many people hold onto a superficial, transactional view of Jesus—a savior they reach for only to make their immediate circumstances a little better. They swap a deep, authentic faith for a checklist of what they can get out of the Lord. It becomes a bartering system where Jesus is treated as little more than a cosmic genie expected to grant our wishes. This mindset needs to be completely banished. Yes, Jesus heals. The lame walk, the blind see, the alcoholic finally puts down the bottle, and broken marriages are beautifully restored. These miracles happen because we have a loving Lord who genuinely cares for our earthly lives. But while our faith might start out as a tiny seed, driven by desperation and a need for answered prayers, this is only the beginning. Our loving Father in Heaven, Jesus sitting at His right hand, and the Holy Spirit indwelling us are far more concerned with our long-term faith and holiness. Earthly comforts are temporary, like gold that eventually loses its luster. Who we become in Christ is what lasts for eternity, and our inner holiness is what is truly precious to Him.
We cannot measure God’s goodness, His love, or His protection by how well He aligns with our personal wish lists. We will all know seasons of profound loss, we will feel abandoned at times, and we will face uphill struggles. In the middle of those moments, we have to take heart: our loving Father allows these fires to prepare us for eternity. It is how our faith is proven genuine. Our glaring character defects are chipped away like a master sculptor working on a cherished piece of art. We often find that the very experiences that push us to our absolute limits are the exact things that produce spiritual maturity within us.
Paul understood this deeply. His trials in the ministry were overwhelming, yet he learned the secret of being content whether he had plenty or nothing at all. He knew the Lord was always watching over him with perfect love, and he refused to doubt the goodness of Jesus because of the hardships he endured.
Paul anchored his life in the reality of the resurrection and an eternity spent with Christ. It is a future reality that our earthly minds cannot fully comprehend right now. Yet it is so vital to understand that our Heavenly Father focuses less on our temporary, daily comfort, and more on preparing our souls for that eternal home.
In this life, we will constantly find ourselves caught between opposing forces, much like the clashing Sadducees and Pharisees. We will face opposition so fierce it feels as though we might be torn apart. But Jesus is always standing by our side, inviting us to look up toward heaven, where our true and ultimate existence rests with Him.
Reflection Questions
- Look back at a recent trial or frustration. Did you view it as a sign that God was distant, or can you see how He might have been using it as a sculptor’s tool to chip away a character defect?
- It is easy to slip into a transactional faith where we treat prayer like a vending machine. In what areas of your life do you need to step away from a “wish list” mindset and ask God to focus on your holiness instead?
- When Paul was locked in the barracks after a violent riot, Jesus did not promise him an easy escape; He promised him a future assignment in Rome. How does shifting your focus to God’s long-term purpose give you the courage to handle today’s pressure?
Prayer
Father,
Thank You that You never leave our side and that You are never too busy to extend Your comfort to us. Forgive us for the times we treat You like a cosmic genie, judging Your goodness by how quickly You grant our temporary wishes. We want a faith that is deeper than a simple bartering system. Thank You for the trials that test us and the moments that refine us, even when they are painful. Keep our eyes fixed firmly on the promise of the resurrection and our eternal home with You. Give us the courage to stand for the truth, trusting that You are holding us close through every earthly battle. In Jesus’ name.
Amen.
